Measuring methods and equipment

Photogrammetry, Proliner, Leica or a 3D scanner? The answer depends on what you make and how you work. I can help you evaluate the options before buying equipment, or learn to use data you already have.

From measurements to a usable model

Capturing the boat is only part of the job. You also need to check scale and alignment, organise the data and use it to construct the shapes you want to make.

Photogrammetry

Planning your photographs, processing them and bringing a correctly scaled model into your CAD work.

Proliner and Leica

Using Proliner or Leica iCON iCS50 measuring data, checking units and alignment, and preparing reference geometry.

Point clouds and meshes

Assessing the data you have, cleaning and organising it, and identifying which parts are useful for the design.

Rhino surfaces and patterns

Building curves and surfaces from the reference data, then developing canvas panels, framework and workshop patterns.

Working from a boat scan

Using the data in Rhino

These examples from my work at Tecsew show surface construction, panel divisions and a finished design render.

Charcoal Bavaria Vision 42 cockpit enclosure model in Rhino, with red seam lines and clear window panels
Understand the complete design. A Bavaria Vision 42 enclosure, showing how the canopy, windows and panel divisions work together.
Sprayhood surfaces in Rhino with highlighted surface curves, construction lines and cockpit reference geometry
Develop the surfaces. Explore the relationship between reference geometry, curves and the shape of the canvas.
Rendered dark canvas cockpit enclosure with clear windows and supporting framework on a white background
Communicate the result. A rendered enclosure makes the overall form, windows and supporting framework easier to discuss.

Help choosing a method

In an initial paid consultation, we can look at your products, experience, budget and working conditions. Bring sample data if you have it; we can review both the data and the process needed to use it.

£400 for two hours on Microsoft Teams.

Learn to use your data

If you already have the equipment, tuition can follow your own jobs. We can start with the fundamentals or concentrate on the processing and Rhino steps you need help with.

£200 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. No VAT charged.
